A Cosmopolitan Diplomat: Madame Deneffe arrives in town

Following our previous Émigré announcement on the departure of Mr Evert Maréchal, Mrs Michèle Deneffe, the new Belgian Consul General in Hong Kong and Macau, has arrived on August 8 from the land of diamonds, chocolate, frites, beer, and Tintin.

Mrs Michèle Deneffe has a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy and in Political Sciences (International Relations).

After teaching Philosophy for a few years, she entered the diplomatic scene in 1989. She was posted twice in Geneva (Belgian Permanent Representation at the Office of the United Nations and Specialized Agencies) as well as in the Belgian Embassy in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and in Vienna (Belgian Permanent Representation at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe/OSCE).

From August 2005 until August 2008, she was Minister Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission in the Embassy of Belgium in Beijing.

Her last position was Director of the “North Africa and Middle East” Department at the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Brussels (2012-2015).

Mrs Deneffe has a great interest for cultural activities, including Chinese and Asian art and heritage. She also loves walking, swimming, horse-riding – and Chinese cuisine.
