On 31 May Bright Hong Kong hosted a morning session on “Populism & Nationalism: Democracy on the Brink” to look into how democracy as an ideology and political system should refine itself in face of rising populism partly as a reaction and partly a byproduct of it.

While the topic is itself a serious one, the discussion also served as a farewell bid to Austrian Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau since 2013, Dr Claudia Reinprecht, who will assume her new role as Permanent Representative of Austria to the UNESCO this Summer.

As a celebrated diplomat, Dr Reinprecht has a vast experience in bilateral and multilateral relations and organisations and has had a profound profile with the United Nations, the European Union, the European Free Trade Association as well as the European Environment Agency. She also has an expertise in international public law, international criminal law and refugee law.

Attendants included: Germán Muñoz, Founder and Director of BrightHK; Paul Zimmerman, District Councillor at Southern District Council; Andrew Work, BrightHK co-founder and Founder of Harbour Times Forums; Alicia García-Herrero, BrightHK co-founder and Chief Economist, Asia Pacific at NATIXIS; Renu Bathia, BrightHK member and Founding Partner at SuperCharger; Tjeerd de Boer, BrightHK member and Professor at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Hong Kong; Mauricio Lozano, BrightHK member and financial expert; Daniel de Blocq, BrightHK member and Chairman of the Dutch Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong; Werner Hess, Deputy Director of the European Union Academic Programme; and Maria Tsolaki, Financial Forensics Investigator who also worked Ministry of Finance, Hellenic Republic.
