Centrist group Path of Democracy announced today (23 May) the establishment of the Hong Kong Academy of Politics and Public Policy in bid to nurture talents for public service.

The academy will co-organise a Senior Executive Diploma in Political Leadership programme with the University of Hong Kong, School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE) starting from October, 2017. The course will consist of lectures on various political topics, network seminars, policy projects and on-the-ground campaign and public affairs engagement training.

Notable lecturers and guest speakers include Professor Chan Ming-kau from Stanford University, Dr Simon Shen, former LegCo presidents Andrew Wong Wang-fat and Jasper Tsang, current Exco Convenor Lam Woon-kwong as well as Bar Association chairman Paul Shieh Wing-tai.

Ronny Tong, founder of Path of Democracy, said the group will seek a closer relationship with the next administration and that the programme can help aspirants acquire necessary knowledge and skills, be it in the government or political parties. He added that while Path of Democracy will handle the initial screening of applicants, students will be assessed by HKU SPACE and there is no intention to turn the course into a “party school”.

“Other local courses on politics and administration tend to focus more on Western ideologies but lack substance on how to actually implement them into the Hong Kong political arena,” HKU’s Professor Richard Wong Yue-chim, himself a confirmed lecturer of the programme, claimed.

The course includes basic knowledge on Hong Kong politics and offers a chance for participants to engage with different political players ranging from NGOs, lobbyists, activists to the mass media. An exchange trip will be organised at the end of the course with the destination still undetermined. It will offer 20 to 35 spaces and charges a tuition fee of HK$28,000 each.
